Oversee and monitor the APL Environmental/Health/Safety (EHS) Program and manage the Environmental Health and Safety Group (HES). Serve as the HES Group Supervisor. Supervise and manage the Life Safety Services Section (HES-1, APL Fire Department) and HES Technical Services (HES-2). These sections support the APL EHS Program by providing field services, emergency response, professional advice/counsel, compliance activities, and occupational medicine services.
Perform hiring, career development, budget and planning within the HES Group. Provide organizational leadership. Oversee staff development. Conduct performance evaluations. Determine required skills, manage staffing coverage, anticipate future requirements, recruit and hire as needed. Ensure the quality of the Group's products. Serve as the EHS Program Manager. Includes oversight of risk management and regulatory compliance in the EHS disciplines of environmental control, industrial hygiene (includes biosafety), health physics (ionizing and non ionizing radiation), life safety/property protection/emergency response, occupational medicine, and safety. Serve as the Executive Secretary of the APL Safety Committee (SC). This includes recording/documenting SC activities, assuring that SC Subcommittees support APL EHS Program requirements, carrying out SC annual inspections , organizing the quarterly meetings and that the SC provides an opportunity for staff members to voice their concerns regarding the APL EHS Program. Participate on the Human Resources and Services Department supervisors/managers team in order to enhance the productivity of the Department as a whole and consistently apply APL policies and procedures.

Requirements |
Required: 1. BA/BS in an EHS related field or equivalent years of professional work experience in a related field.
2. One or more EHS certification(s) from a recognized organization (e.g., CIH, CHP, CSP, QEP, PE with related engineering experience).
3. Ten years of successful EHS Program experience in a major R&D or industrial facility or similar/comparable background.
4. Minimum five years of experience managing/supervising EHS professionals.
5. Demonstrated expertise in applying EHS practices and processes in several APL EHS Program disciplines, (e.g. health physics, industrial hygiene, environmental control, safety, etc.).
6. Strong written and oral communication skills.
Desired:
1. Masters in an EHS related field.
2. Recognition in the Maryland area by EHS professional community.
3. Familiarity with EHS construction issues.
4. Familiarity with building codes.
